about svalbardbirds.com
These websites are basically a reference tool in order to learn more about the status and occurrence of all species of birds that are registered in Svalbard.
The site is based on registrations of birds available in the artsobservasjoner.no database. Per November 19th 2020, more than 84,000 observations of birds in Svalbard are included in the base. These are basically observations made after the database was established in May 2008. Over the next few years, older observations of birds will be included to a much greater extent in the base, and thus included in the respectice listings on these websites. In that way, the base will be increasingly updated in relation to the actually existing registrations in the years to come.
BirdLife Norge (The Norwegian Ornithological Society) is responsible for the website, whilst the Local report and rarities committee for birds in Svalbard, LRSK Svalbard/Jan Mayen, by Georg Bangjord, has the professional responsibility. Frode Falkenberg is technically responsible, and the website is being maintained by Venke Ivarrud.
The website is not meant to be any reference for species identification, nor for distinguishing between the birds' plumages, age or sex. The site has very limited information about the biology of the species.
Everybody can contribute with observations of birds in the database artsobservasjoner.no. LRSK will validate the observations and ensure that the information in the base is presented as accurately as possible. If you have questions, comments or would like to contribute to improvements to the website, please feel free to contact us here.
